I spent a spell unemployed myself and I will have to disagree with 
this.  Could I have gotten a job delivering pizza or something?  Sure.  
But it would have paid *less* than unemployment benefits, which is 
already pretty bad.  So in my case anyway, not working at all was 
better than working a low wage job outside of my field.

Also, what I found when trying to find work outside of my field is that 
hiring managers were wary having seen this before, where people get 
jobs outside of their field to weather the storm and then go right back 
to their field as soon as they can.  Who wants to hire someone, train 
them, etc. just to find them gone in 6 months?  Getting gainfully 
employed in this market is harder than you might think.
