For the sake of comparison, I've been able to use a windows client to
'map network drive' to the webdav share. From there, assuming permissions
are all legit on the webdav share you can open the file in Word (of all
things!) for writing and (appear to) completely bypass the local filesystem.
Or, that's what it looks like, from one who isn't familiar with the inner
workings of Word.

I haven't tried, but I think it's supposed to yell at your neighbor if
they attempt a write on the same file. Dunno about concurrent reads...

What's really interesting is the thought of folding webdav and subversion
together. They're just screaming to be used for some sort of document
repository / CMS thingamawhatsit.
