[TriLUG] SCSI vs. ATA article

A few days ago, at one of the TriLUG meetings, several of us were
complaining about the high cost of SCSI drives compared to IDE (ATA)
drives of the same size.

I ran across this article which explains the reason the technologies
differ, and cost a whole lot more, in enterprise-quality drives:

http://www.seagate.com/content/docs/pdf/whitepaper/D2c_More_than_Interface_ATA_vs_SCSI_042003.pdf
"ATA vs. SCSI - More than just an interface"

"This paper sets out to clear up a misconception prominent in the
storage community today, that SCSI disc drives and IDE (ATA) disc drives
are the same technology internally, and differ only in their external
interface and in their suggested retail price."

I found it a pretty interesting read -- it's not too technical, but
gives you a good understanding of the hardware differences in these
drives. Now, do take it with a grain of salt because it is written by
Seagate, a major SCSI drive manufacturer, so they're obviously seeking
to justfiy the high price of their enterprise drives.

Regards,
Jeremy, glad that Friday afternoon is coming soon.
