[TriLUG] latex & thesis prep - what am i getting into?

Get MikTex and WinEdt (note that absence of the I in WinEdt) if you want
to do it in Windows. Both are freely availab;e; WinEdt requires a
shareware-type registration, but your department might have one for you.
What dept. are you?
