ah!

re: the FSCK on / or /usr .... it (my previous attempt) actually was 
the / and /home directories that had the error ... i don't remember if 
i had the drives mounted (i doubt it since it made me run a thorough 
FSCK at boot time, which is when it FSCKed my data to shreds).

welp, i guess i'll give it a try!

anyone know who gave FSCK the name and why?  .... :)  maybe it's time 
to break down and get this:
