Have you checked to see if your hard drives support DMA? I set both DMA
and 32bit data I/O using hdparm at the tail end of /etc/rc.local
/sbin/hdparm -c3 -d1 /dev/$device
where $device is one of the following
hda, hdb, hdc, hdd, hde, hdf, hdg, hdh
