The only time I've used a custom kernel "in production" was when I had a
server running RHL 6.2 with two gigabytes of RAM. The standard 2.2
kernel at that time only supported just under 1GB by default; a special
option was necessary for 2GB. Now you only need to worry about the 4GB
limit, and even so there are usually "bigmem" kernels already compiled
with the options for larger than 4GB.

On my desktop I've compiled my own kernels to use Win4Lin in the past,
but don't use it any more; OpenOffice.org has cured all my "productivity
application" needs.

I did try to compile a 2.6.0testX (5? 6? can't remember) kernel a few
weeks ago, but it was a miserable failure. Oh well.
