I don't see the validity in your complaint.  When I start GIMP, the main
window, the one with the "File Xtns Help" menu on it, has a 'Crop or
Resize' button with the icon of a mat knife on it.  One click on that,
then a drag in the image you are working on, and you are off and running
with a Crop operation.  This is GIMP version 1.2.5 on RH 9.
