[TriLUG] RE:disk-wiping tool?

I've found this to be particularly useful and better than most commercial efforts I've tested it against:

http://staff.washington.edu/jdlarios/autoclave/

Easily customizable and fits on a floppy. Here is a link to the command it invokes:

Try booting to anything, then doing:

dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/hd{x}

where {x} is the drive you want to wipe.

Hello LUGgers!

The SparcStation has been claimed (with 2 other folks in the queue). Thanks for the responses!

One small correction. For this you should probably use /dev/urandom
instead because /dev/random will block if there isn't enough randomness
in the random pool. /dev/urandom will use the randomness in the pool
to generate a pseudo-random sequence and will therefore never block.
So, if you want to get done in a timely fashion, use /dev/urandom
instead of /dev/random when overwriting your harddrive.

Cheers,
Tanner

Heya folks,

As Roy posted in the announcement earlier, we are having birthday cake
along pizza at tonight's meeting, to celebrate TriLUG's 5th birthday.
Please come and eat some -- it will be a BIG cake.

(Remember all the popcorn we had at the June meeting? Yeah, so we like
to think big. *grin*)

Also, here's the abstract for the White Dwarf Linux presentation:

White Dwarf Linux (http://www.whitedwarflinux.com/) is designed to run
on PC/104 (www.pc104.org) embedded computer modules. PC/104 offers full
architecture, hardware, and software compatibility with the PC bus, but
in ultra-compact (3.6" x 3.8") stackable modules. Scott Every, CTO of
Blast Internet Services and maintainer of the White Dwarf Linux
distribution, will present a talk covering the following:

     1. An introduction to White Dwarf Linux
     2. The specifications on software versions, etc.
     3. The White Dwarf philosophy
     4. An Overview of toolchain and the White Dwarf build system
     5. A discussion of White Dwarf native packaging (slackware's
        pkgtools)
Finally, a demonstration of installing White Dwarf on a PC/104 machine,
including a web server which then should be accessible to attendees.

I confess... I'm addicted to Battle Field 1942. It's about the only
reason I use Windows any more.

What are some great games that you guys (and gals) like to run on
linux? I've been having such great linux experiences lately, I'm
anxious to leave Windows completely behind me.

Thanks!

Well Michael,

Have you tried BF1942 on Linux?
http://www.transgaming.com/gamepage.php?gameid=632

It seems that lots of folks are having difficulty with the 1.5 patch. I
stopped playing when 1.3 was out and had no troubles then.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I like bzflag -- see http://www.bzflag.org/
. It's a mutliplayer FPS where you drive around tanks and pick up flags
which enable weapons or capabilities. Pretty simple concept, yet fun.

We have a bzflag server running at bzflag.trilug.org. We also have the
bot on the IRC channel set up to see statitics on who's playing, so you
can see if a game is going on. Just ask Tribot for "bzstats". IRC is
also a good way of drumming up players (irc.trilug.org, channel
#trilug).

Maybe something to think about:

http://www.transgaming.com/gamepage.php?gameid=632

They are actively working on getting this one 100% up on linux.

No reason to give up your game, just because you are giving up windows
;-).

OK. I see someone pointed you at transgaming. That'll get you most of
the the really popular windows games, but there are many really nice
games that are native to Linux.

One good resource for finding out about them is the Linux Game Tome
(http://www.happypenguin.org/)

BZflag is excellent.

Enigma is a cute puzzle/strategy game (FreeOxyd.
http://www.nongnu.org/enigma/)

Triptych is a "Squishy Tetris" that's quite addictive.
http://www.chroniclogic.com/triptych.htm

And of course, Enemy Territory, which is an iD game.
http://games.activision.com/games/wolfenstein/index.asp?section=et

If you guys know of any good games, I'm always looking for new ways to
waste time.

greetings all,

after watching the office and evolution threads pass by i got curious
enough to try this evolution thing on one of my RHL boxes. well, after
the installation puked 'cause evolution is evidently not still supported
on RH 7.2 and after i installed RH 9 and after i got the video bugs
worked out ... anyway ...

i truly like evolution. it does everything that outlook does for me
EXCEPT provide a link to my PocketPC. i confess that i am now a PocketPC
user only because i tried a Palm first and then a PocketPC so it's what
i have now. i could find nothing in google or at the ximian site about
sync'ing with a PocketPC. anyone have any great suggestions? i've got a
pcmcia jacket and network card around here somewhere so network sync'ing
is an option. and, please, let's save the 'you should be using a Palm'
comments for later.

thanks,
stan

When you login in text, a login quote pops up. Anyone know where/how that's
stored?

I'd guess it's running fortune.

Try man fortune

The database may be in /usr/share/games/fortunes

I've got an iso of Tom's Root Boot that I've burned bcwipe on, but you
have to mount the cdrom drive after it's booted up. Bcwipe can be run
from a floppy as well (so boot using knoppix or tom's and then run it).

Bcwipe can be had by googling.

The MultiSync project, http://www.multisync.org/ says they have a plugin for
Windows CE / Pocket PC synchronization.

Many thanks to Scott and the whole White Dwarf gang for the excellent
presentation on the development and feature-set of White Dwarf Linux.
Sounds like you guys are having a good time working on that project!
Congrats on your 2.1 release!

I've been having fun with The Battle for Wesnoth found at

It is a fantasy strategy type game with about 10 playable levels under
active development.

can anyone recommend a linux P2P client(s) for accessing the various
file sharing networks out there? a client of mine asked me about this
the other day, i'd like to give them a few options. a google/freshmeat
search turns up a bunch of hits, but i was hoping to narrow the list
down to stuff that actually works well from experience, and i have none
in this area. and please, no "downloading music is stealing" or "the
RIAA sucks" comments, i'm well aware of both.

I used LimeWire with great success, although it's been a while since I
logged on to it. It's easy to install and you just need a JRE before hand.
It even has some features that I wish Kazaa had, not that I use Kazaa. : )

This site is probably interesting for a lot of reasons, but the most
intriguing to me is that clicking on the link causes my machine to
re-init to RC5:

http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/powersof10/index.html

Jon Carnes (and more fun with java).

Pretty cool, but no re-init to RC5 for me. Just worked.
