A couple of thoughts:
1] Have you tried commenting out the "glx" 3D layer module being loaded in
/etc/X11/XF86Config. kdm may only use this if it is available.
2] Have you tried using an alternate login manager, perhaps xdm or gdm don't
require OpenGL.
