[TriLUG] Laptop battery life comparison: Windows vs. Linux

Ok, Mike Mueller had asked a question on this subject a while
back, and I'd volunteered to benchmark my laptop under both
Linux and Windows and compare the battery life. Here are my
(very unscientific) results:
The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite P25-s507,
running Windows 2000 Server and RedHat 9. The spec sheet
says the estimated battery life is 2 hours.
Under Linux, I got almost exactly 2.5 hours of life
before the battery died.
Under Windows, I have never let the battery actually die,
but... I've ran the machine for about an hour and 15 minutes,
and the battery life indicator read about 50%. So, assuming
the battery juice decays on a linear curve, it should be good
for about 2.5 hours under Windows.
So, my very unscientific, semi-empirical experience is that
the battery life is almost identical between Windows and
Linux.
Mike, hope this helps..
TTYL,
Phil

Thank God we have the 2nd Amendment to tell our elected representatives
that enough is enough.
It's time to put "... from my cold, dead hands" back where it belongs.
