dunno about older versions, but spamassassin 2.60 uses both.  if the 
message is considered spam, a "X-Spam-Flag: YES" line is added to the 
header, in addition to the "X-Spam-Status: Yes, hits=23.8 required=5.0 
tests=..." line.  if the message is not spam, then you'll see 
"X-Spam-Status: No" and the "X-Spam-Flag: YES" line will be absent.
