[TriLUG] a 'non-windows' method to upgrade BIOS/firmware?

Hi All-

I'm having a few issues with DVD burning, but before I write a novel 
about it, I'd like to try upgrading the BIOS and especially the 
firmware of the DVD writer (lite on).  All binaries available are 'for 
windows based machines', so other than installing windows and dual 
booting, how does one upgrade the BIOS/firmware using a non-'windows' 
method?
