[TriLUG] strange boot problem

How old a computer is this?  Have you checked to see if there are any
BIOS updates available?  It's possible that older BIOSes don't like the
methods that certain CDs are using to boot.  I think that at one point
Linux vendors switched from the "El Torito" boot method (which involves
a 1.44 floppy image and fools the BIOS into thinking it's booting from a
floppy), to the "ISOLinux" boot method, which doesn't have the 1.44 MB
limitation and works differently.  Perhaps the working CDs (Knoppix,
Windows XP) are still using El Torito?
