You could also remaster a knoppix cd that's customized for your
environment, say NIS authentication, therefore homedirs that exist out
on a server.  

The quick view is, 

	Mount the .iso on the loopback device
	cp the entire CD somewhere else
	Make changes needed
	recompress the few things that you have had to decompress for the above
step
	Use the scripts provided by Knopper, (pretty sure on this), to build
your own .iso. 



After this you could run everything off of CD, have centralized
authentication and homedirs, but all programs etc are still untouchable
by the users on the CD.


That sounds like a clean compromise between Xterminals and full
installations.
