# ip route add

won't let me use a MAC addr for nexthop (says "expects IP address"
or something like that)

but it did accept

# ip route add default scope global nexthop dev eth1

and I can now send pings to abitrary IPs

unfortunately where I am, I'm not getting a signal so can't really
tell if I've done anything useful. (I get "destination unreachable")
