I'll toss a positive data point in here..

I have one of the wireless router/APs that has been fine.  It's much 
better than the SMC i replaced.

I was having the same issues you describe with the SMC.  The web 
interface would time out, it would stop forwarding packets, all kinds of 
good stuff.
