Thanks for the sudo idea... it got me heading in the right direction. I
got it all configured, but sudo'ed apps apparently have issues
connecting to the X server. So I did some googling on that and ended up
finding "xsu", which basically does exactly what I wanted in the first
place... you run xsu, and it'll ask for a path, a user, and a pass. Or
you can specify any of the three at the command line.
So I have: xsu -u user -c evolution-1.4
It's very awesome. ;-)
