Well, assuming you already have the external enclosure, an external usb 
harddrive should show up as a scsi device.

I'd start by using "dmesg" to show the kernel messages, one of which 
(probably near the end) should be your usb disk.

Then you could use the mount command like so (substituting the proper 
devices and paths):
mount /dev/sda /mnt

However, if you don't already have the external enclosure, I'd go with 
jtower's suggestion and get a 2.5" drive adapter. Cheaper and easier.
