thats all there was to it - checked off ldap in authconfig
saved me from the more drastic steps I was contemplating

If you can get into the sytem, check authconfig and see if LDAP is
enabled.... (this updates /etc/pam.d/system-auth to include pam_ldap.so
for log in)
