My 2 cents:
There are Many "Live CDs" available right now. These bootable CDs
run Linux on your PC without touching the Hard Disk Drive.
By testing several versions of these Live CDs you can try out
different versions of Linux and their different window managers without
having to commit to any one version at first. If you find one you like,
then get the full installation set and go to it.
Another use of these live CDs is to see if they run on your hardware
- the mouse works ok, the video is clear, etc.
