Hi Jason, please excuse the late reply; I am also a new convert to
Debian and am learning my way around.
For sound have you run (as root) "sndconfig" ? You may have to
"apt-get install sndconfig" it. It was not on my box when I first ran it.
My weekend project will be to upgrade/compile a 2.6 kernel as the
Woody install/boot kernel does not have sound compiled in.

One method I am using is to goto Debian/Packages, then selecting my
distro ( http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages ).
I then chose the "All Packages" list (page bottom) and use my
browser to search for item like "sound" or "tuner" - which seems to only
show FM radio tuner software for your case - you may have to find a card
or brand specific site for that problem. Several hits on "joystick",
there appears to be a "joystick library"(?).
The menu configuration process will differ due to which window
manager you are using, could you be more specific? I'm play with fvwm
and fluxbox, I like their speed and features.
