Was the device you saw at best buy a Linksys Storage Link for USB 2.0 
drives (NSLU2)?  From what I have heard those are quite hackable and 
would probably give you a really good starting point.  

If you do a search on NSLU2, you should find a couple of good pages with 
hacking info near the top.
