Well... first off, why Thunderbird doesn't have vcard support yet is beyond me,
but from the looks of it, that is being worked on. :)

Getting Contacts from Evolution to Thunderbird
----------------------------------------------

1. WARNING - I had to use Microsoft products to make this work. There are
apparently python based scripts you can find on the Internet with Google, but I
don't know how to scan one to know if I can trust it, so I just did it this
way.)

2. Save *individually* each Contact you have as a vcard in a specified
directory such as /home/username/vcards/
3. Snag that entire folder, send to a Microsoft machine running Outlook
(Outlook Express may also work).
4. Import (drag and drop) (save and close) every single vcard from all your
Contacts in that directory.
5. Export from Outlook to .CSV comma delimited DOS
6. Open the CSV file (I used Excel) and remove all empty columns (trust me,
this makes matching fields in the Thunderbird import easier!)
7. Goto your Address Book in Thunderbird and import from CSV, matching the
fields for the import routine, making sure you pay attention to which column
represents which side of the date import routine!
8. Whatever the name of your .csv file will be the name of a new Address Book
in Thunderbird, so drag and drop all those into the main Address Book *if you
want* and delete the one it created; I did.
9. If you are confused by the name that shows, make sure to change the name to
show First Last and not Display Name as Display Name is not setup right on the
imported address book entries, at least it wasn't for me.

OK folks... that process was REALLY REALLY annoying, but until Thunderbird
supports vcards, others may need these notes. Or of course, if you don't have
access to the Microsoft products I used, find a way to test and trust those
python scripts out on the Internet.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Thunderbirding,
David McDowell
