OS/2 originally started as a joint venture between IBM and Microsoft.
When Microsoft could not take the terms of the deal anymore, they
forked their own variation, called Win-NT.

Because Win-NT is the root to Win-2K and Win-XP, I could fathom that
the OS/2 deal would prevent IBM from releasing it because some of the
source may still be in Win-XP (I doubt it, but who knows?).

P.S. I certainly liked OS/2 over its post-Microsoft-split variation
OS/2 Warp.
