[TriLUG] How not to run a network

Well I agree with a lot you guys are saying, but I am speaking
globally here. I am astounded that SO many people, are able to make
SO many decisions that are SO bad, and SO consistently, seemingly
without repercussion. You simply shouldn't be able to claim that
'Linux spreads viruses' (overtly or covertly), without having to back
it up. I consider it 'technological slander'. Same goes for
unscientific TCO studies but that's a slightly differrent matter...

Microsoft and some other vendors require zero actual engineering-level
knowledge of what is going on, physically, as long as you are
promoting their product. Therefore the Engineering and Computer
Science environments gravitate towards the BSD/Linux OSes because they
obviously aren't filled with dummies. That leaves the dummy office
environments to run default stuff and dummy m$ admins are left to make
default claims. That is ok as long as the conversation is
semi-reality based. But when they get to the voodoo level, they
<must> be stopped.

I think that we as a Linux community need to do more to educate
'regular office' people, many of whom are nice people, willing to
learn and embrace new ideas. What bothers me is the organizational
intertia that I described earlier -- just put out fires, keep the
viruses running, and tell everyone how busy and important you are.
Something needs to be done to make the 'powers that be' know that they
are making foolish decisions. This is especially true in an academic
environment that obviously doesn't care much about saving money or
keeping up with the competition like a normal business would. I like
Jeff's idea.
