No, I was using a MATLAB function called sound(x,fs), where x is the 
data values (voltages) and fs is the sampling frequency for the 
voltages.  I tried what Mr. Anderson suggested, but it didn't seem to 
matter what level I set the PCM or the output level to.  I even tried 
multiplying the voltages by 0.1 and interestingly, that didn't even 
reduce the volume of the output signal.  It must be a problem with how 
MATLAB is trying to use the device.  I don't have a lot of time right 
now to go into all its private .m scripts to see what it is doing, but I 
think this is the problem.  Thanks for all the help folks!
