squid startup is touchy.
The demon writes as nobody.nobody and
needs write access to the logging directory before it will start.
I'm sure there are lots of other things that will
prevent squid from starting.
You are supposed to create a special directory for squid to log to
(/usr/var/something...) with the correct permissions. Looking
in several places for logs is a pain so I send the logs to /var/log/
and changed the permissions on /var/log/ to get it to
go. I'm sure this is a security violation, but I've decided to
do it anyhow.
