[TriLUG] Boot hangs when moving disk to another system

I have an AMD box that just crapped out (I suspect an overtemp
fry). I need to get the host back online ASAP, so I've tried
moving the sole IDE drive to another box and booting. Unfortunately,
it gets to the 'Uncompressing kernel ... Ok. Booting linux'
message.. and then hangs. (I didn't check to see if there was
disk activity.)

I tried moving the drive to a P4 box, and then to a much older
IBM box, with no change in behaviour.

The AMD box appears to be a total loss, and getting it replaced
would take days to weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions for
a) how to debug the problem with booting from the disk on a different
box, and b) how to get past the hang?

Thanks!
