For $14, a sole proprietor can register a company name. It's called
a "doing business as" or "D/B/A" form.
In Wake County:

After you register your D/B/A form, go to the bank and open a business
checking account under that name (they use your SSN, not a corporate
EIN number). If someone writes a check to your company, you can deposit
it into that bank account. When you file your taxes, simply fill out a
schedule C, just as if you had done business using your own name.
