First some links:

Free online/PDF versions of PHP books:

013147149X_book.pdf (this is a good book, but maybe not if PHP is your
first language)

Some simple searches of job sites will return many more VB or Visual
Basic listings than PHP. That said Oracle and IBM are both supporters
of PHP and I wouldn't be surprised to see much more in the way of
Oracle PHP projects. With PHP 5 you have many new features/concepts
that make it more interesting as a language.
