John and Sam - Thanks for the information.

The research starts with algorithms.  Once I see a certain kind
behavior, then I'll move outward to measure it, interact with it, etc.
 My project doesn't have anything to do with search engines so far,
but I imagine the resulting algorithms may be useful for such
purposes.

For sholton - XML may be involved, probably as use of native XML databases.
