all,
i too had similar frustrations using a linux laptop and a hotel's wireless
network. for some random reason (don't recall why) i tried telling my laptop
to connect to ANY wifi connection that it found (not to a specific one).
worked like a champ from then on.
i don't know if this is repeatable at a different location or not. my (two)
experiences since then did work with the published ESSID.

I've had the same frustration at other hotels with cat5 and the hotel
network. Same story: you logon to their networ, a browser window should
open up, you enter authorization code, and off you go, except for in Linux.
Anyone comes up with a solution, I have my ears perked up.
