[TriLUG] Expandable storage options?

I want to add some storage to one of my desktops, and I'd rather
not use IDE because of the two-drive-per-controller limitation.
Plus the internal drive bays are full, so I need to move to an
expansion cabinet of some type.

I have a SCSI card in the box, so I was anticipating going to a
seven-drive expansion box to which I could add more drives as
needed. Unfortunately, SCSI drives seem to have virtually
disappeared from the market.

I'm hearing that firewire is the replacement for SCSI parallel
interfaces, but I'm a software geek and lag terribly behind the
hardware awareness curve. I've basically ignored firewire ever
since I first encountered it in the l990s when it seemed to be
mostly an experimental toy from Apple.

So, what would people suggest for an external expansion strategy?
