[TriLUG] Problems with SuSE 9.3 on IBM Laptop

All,

I am having networking problems with SuSE 9.3 and a old IBM Thinkpad. 
I've tried three different PC cards (IBM, D-Link and 3Com) with the same 
results. SuSE appears to install and configure the PC Card properly but 
never gets a DHCP address.  ifup-dhcp eth0 says ".....no IP address 
yet....backgrounding."

A closer look at ifconfig shows:

RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:551
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0

Can anybody point me in the right direction to start troubleshooting?
