Got it working. The problem (again) was that I didn't have 
the driver. Last time I looked (about 2yrs ago) Linux didn't 
have any cardbus support and I didn't know how recent 
hardware (the laptop) had to be to get cardbus support.

The newer (2003) pcmcia-HOWTO on ibiblio (rather 
than the one on TLDP) straigtened me out and it didn't take
long to realise that even laptops from 1999 have cardbus 
support. The first check was that the card was seen with 
lspci so I must have pci-pcmcia hardware support.

The driver listed there is tulip_cb, but there is no module 
or file by that name in the kernel. When the card is 
working, the module loaded is "tulip"
