Mute this ^ (press 'm' in alsamixer, or use Volume Control in GNOME).

Mute this ^.

This one ^ is tricky. Some AC'97 codecs have flipped the register
setting. Prior to ALSA 1.0.8, 'External Amplifier' needed to be toggled
explicitly to [on] (unmuted), but we're seeing a fair number of reports
with SiS codecs that have this flipped register.

Here's what I'd do: If muting both 'Headphone' and 'IEC958' do not give
you sound, please unmute 'External Amplifier' in addition.

Thanks,
