This one is a head-scratcher for me. Maybe somebody can see my slip-up
straightaway
I've got:
0000:00:0a.0 Network controller: Intersil Corporation Prism 2.5
Wavelan chipset (rev 01)
and I want hostap (orinoco was buggy)
so I (on a kubuntu box):
sudo apt-get hostap-source
cd /usr/src/modules/hostap-source
sudo ./debian/rules binary-modules KSRC=/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.12
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i hostap-modules-2.6.12_0.4.1-1_i386.deb
uname -r == 2.6.12-9-k7 (in case you were wondering)
sudo depmod -ae
sudo modprobe hostap
/etc/network/interfaces has this stanza:
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid soymilk latte
wireless-key wireless-key hu:zz:ah:my:ke:yi:sl:on:gi:sh
then I try to ifup wlan0 and get:
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
invalid argument "wireless-key".
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; No such device.

Failed to bring up wlan0.
And yes, it should be wlan0. I read the README (
http://hostap.epitest.fi/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/hostap/README?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/plain),
which lists wlan0 as the default. Even so, I tried re-editing
/etc/network/interfaces with all sorts of interface names to no avail.
Hostap works fine on my laptop (integrated prism2.5). What gives?
Many thanks in advance,
CMP
