Hi Wayne,

You can put "export TAPE=/dev/nst0" in your environment for this effect. 
  Also, according to the mt man page, a default device can be defined in 
the file /usr/include/sys/mtio.h.

Linking /dev/tape (as has been said) is probably the easiest way though.
