This is a good reason to be running your own MTA.
I've been doing it for the past 4 or 5 years and have found it to be a better
situation than relying on someone else for my email.
Not to say that my record as a mail server administrator has been any more
stellar than RoadRunner's, but at least when I discover that I've screwed
something up then I have something to keep me occupied while fixing it instead
of waiting impatiently.
Most competent email systems keep trying to send email to you for 3 to 5 days
before they give up, so I have a good amount of time to fix a problem before I
start losing email. I think crummy services like AOL only try for about 20
minutes and then give up.
