I am surprised that this page does not mention a utility told to us by our
wonderful presenter, Mr. Waugh. The utility is NetworkManager. It is a
daemon that runs as root and communicates to an optional applet via dbus.
Without the applet, it simply attempts to keep you connected.

To install:
aptitude install networkmanager

To set up the applet (optional):
Main Menu -> System -> Preferences -> Sessions
Click on the Startup Programs tab
Click Add
Enter "nm-applet" in the Startup Command
Click OK
Click Close

When next you log in, you will have an applet that shows your current
status, and when you click on it, gives you the option of what network
connection you would like to use.
