The drive info is:
IBM Deskstar
Model: IC35L060AVVA07-0
P/N: 07N8098
FRU: 19K1570
The jumpers are set to the Cable Select setting.
Have previously been able to install the "Unofficial" Fedora Core 4.1
distro on this same box.

A couple of thoughts on this; Can you post the actual model # of
the hard drive. This could be an "alternate jumper" problem, where the
alternate jumpers need to be installed(they may NOT be shown on the
drive label - check mfg. web site).
And have you tried editing the Grub boot line with such items as
"noacpi", "noscsi" or others?
