[TriLUG] Nagios upgrade - suggestions requested

Just wondering if anyone has any experience upgrading Nagios from 1.x to
2.x. I have this as one of my tasks and was wondering if anyone had some
suggestions on a good strategy.

We currently have 4 servers located around the planet: 1 central server,
2 distributed servers and 1 distributed server that is also the fail-
over central server. Ideally I would have 4 additional servers that I
could install 2.x on and then migrate hosts and services over time, but
that is highly unlikely. If I'm lucky, I'll get 1 temporary server to
use.

One of the issues that concerns me is that 1.x configuration files are
not 2.x compatible, well at least ours aren't. We have a fair amount to
monitor and it will be quite a task to move everything over. Our configs
need a clean up, so maybe that is not such a bad thing, but it makes it
very difficult to upgrade in place. I'm wondering if I could I run a mix
of 1.x and 2.x servers (assuming I could munge the config files)?

In addition, our sysadmins (I'm a dev) would like to upgrade from RHEL3
to RHEL4, but I think they will need to wait until after I am finished
with the Nagios upgrade. :-)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Owen
