Mark,

I've learned a couple of tricks, but none are as elegantly simple as the
excel alternative.

One method, suggested by Anthony Chilco from openoffice.org forumns is: 

Before entering any numbers, select the column and format the cells
(format / cells)
Choose 'user defined' and enter the first three octets of the IP address
in a string as below:
"192.168.0."#
Enter '1' in the first cell and '2' in the second.
Select both cells and drag the handle down

Another method suggested by David Chapman is:

In cell A1 - enter  =concatenate("192.168.0.";row())
Drag down...

...and the suggestion by Jon Carnes, just moments ago, led me to my preferred method.  
I'm using a leading <space> in place of the " Jon noted.  This lets me drag the auto-gen just like excel.

As it happens, I'm using calc to keep track of my burgeoning list of Pix statics.
In this instance, the leading space is actually beneficial in copy and paste operation.
