[TriLUG] Skype problem on laptop

I have an HP zx5000 laptop running Ubuntu Breezy. I've been
trying to run Skype, but I get audio problems right after the
call connects.

The audio controller is built into the ATI IXP chipset that
runs most everything on this laptop. "lspci" reports:

Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP150 AC'97 Audio
Controller

I can run the Skype application OK. I call "echo123" and I
hear the lady say "Hello" and then I get noise. When I call
someone else, they say that they can hear me OK.

I tested the Windows version of Skype under vmware, and believe
it or not, it worked!

Any ideas what might be wrong? I'd hate to have to fire up
vmware every time I want to make a call!
