The OpenOffice.org package ( http://www.openoffice.org/ ) has Excel
and Word equilivents. There are several other spreadsheet programs
such as Gnumeric:

Please note that some MS features may be not 100% the same.

For trying out Linux, I am a big fan of the "Live CD's, which boot
from a CD and run in your ram (without touching your hard drive).
These are available in most "flavors" of Linux and allow you to 'see'
several different types in a short time.
Having said that, I am using Ubuntu for my desktop.
