[TriLUG] MySQL & LDAP? Synchable?

I'm working on a project to set up Apache/MySQL/PHP hosting for the  
$UNIVERSITY that is my $EMPLOYER. Users will authenticate for SFTP  
only access (no shell) to their account against a Novell LDAP  
directory. I plan on allocating 1 database per user which users can  
manage via a server-wide installation of phpMyAdmin over SSL. Now I'm  
remembering oh-yeah MySQL keeps it own usernames/passwords in  
mysql.user.

I've found a stub of a project to auth MySQL into Novell on  
forge.novell.com but there's no code, no doc, just seems abandoned.  
Does anyone have any suggestions so that users only have to known  
their LDAP password to authenticate into MySQL?
