Are you referring to "screen"?

You can ssh to a machine
Type screen
start your command
press CTRL+A,D (that's press and hold ctrl then hit A followed by D)
exit ssh
ssh back to machine at a later date/time as same user
type screen -r
resume where you left off

There is a TON of other fanciness you can do with screen, but that'll
do what you want.
