Your friend isn't the only one who's hit this type of problem with
MXLogic.  It's not sendmail, it's MXLogic.  See:

for the RFC controlling MDNs.  The empty envelope from, "<>", in your
example transaction *is* correct behaviour for an MDN.  If I had to
guess the MDN message is getting caught in some kind of anti-relay
mechanism at MXLogic.
