[TriLUG] Disappearing mouse cursor

I've got a (k)ubuntu machine which once in a blue moon seems to lose
the mouse pointer.  It just happened today again.  I came home and
moved the mouse which brought it out of the screen saver, but there
was no mouse pointer.


I ultimately had to kill the XOrg server to get the mouse cursor back,
which killed the apps I had running as well.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this, and/or to restore the mouse
without killing the X session.
